Hip-Hop Is Born in the Bronx

One hot summer evening in the Bronx, a big sister named Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party.

Her little brother DJ Kool Herc plugged two record players into a lamppost and started spinning records.

He learned to loop the drum breaks so the beat would go on and on, and everyone would keep dancing.

Kids danced in fresh new ways on flattened cardboard — that's called breakdancing.

That party grew and grew until it became a whole new kind of music called hip-hop.
