Long ago in South Africa, people were kept apart just because of the color of their skin.

Nelson said this was very wrong, and he worked hard to change it.

For 27 years he was locked away in a prison on a tiny island.

But he never stopped believing in kindness, even for the people who put him there.

When he came out, all of South Africa chose him — he became their first Black president.
