Ruby was six years old when she was picked to go to a new school.

Long ago in New Orleans, Black kids and white kids couldn't be in the same class.

On her very first day, big crowds shouted, but Ruby held her mama's hand and walked in.

For a whole year, she was the only child in her classroom — but she never gave up.

Because of Ruby, kids of every color can learn together today.
