Duke Kahanamoku

Duke grew up on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, riding waves on a heavy wooden board.

He swam so fast that at the Olympics he won five medals for the United States.

Wherever he traveled, he took his surfboard and showed people how to ride the waves.

One day he even used his board to save eight sailors from a sinking boat!

Everyone still calls him 'the father of modern surfing.'
