World War II Ends

By the summer of 1945, Nazi Germany had already surrendered in May — that day was called V-E Day (Victory in Europe).

In August, Japan surrendered too, and August 14 became V-J Day (Victory over Japan).

In Times Square in New York City, thousands of people poured into the streets to cheer.

Church bells rang, ships blew their horns, and confetti fell like snow from the tall buildings.

After six long years, World War II was finally over and soldiers could start coming home.
