The First Thanksgiving

A group of families called the Pilgrims sailed a long way across the ocean to a brand-new land.

Their first winter was very cold, and they didn't know how to grow food there.

The Wampanoag people, who had lived on the land for a long time, kindly showed them how to plant corn and find fish.

When autumn came, there was finally enough food, so everyone sat down together at a big outdoor table.

They shared their meal and said 'thank you' — and that is why we still say thank you every Thanksgiving.
