Barbara McClintock

Barbara loved being outside, and she loved cornfields most of all.

She peeked inside kernels of colorful Indian corn and noticed something amazing — tiny pieces of the corn's code could jump from spot to spot.

Other scientists didn't believe her for a long time, but Barbara kept working quietly in her cornfield.

Many years later, everyone realized she was right.

In 1983 she won the Nobel Prize in Medicine, all by herself.
