Althea Gibson

Althea grew up playing paddle tennis on the streets of Harlem.

She swung so hard and moved so fast that coaches noticed right away.

In 1956 she became the first Black player to win a Grand Slam tennis title.

The next year she won Wimbledon — where a queen handed her the trophy.

She opened the door for every Black tennis champion who came after.
