One star for each brand-new state, all stitched together in a circle.
The Story
When America decided to be its own country, it needed its very own flag to fly.
The story goes that a seamstress in Philadelphia named Betsy Ross took out her needle and thread to help.
She picked cheerful red and white stripes — one for each of the thirteen colonies that had just become states.
In the corner she stitched a blue square and thirteen little white stars, arranged in a friendly circle.
On June 14th, the leaders said, 'Yes, this is our flag!' — and America has had a star-spangled flag ever since.
