The Civil War Ends

After four long years, the Southern general Robert E. Lee could see the war was over.

He rode to a small village in Virginia called Appomattox Court House to meet the Union general Ulysses S. Grant.

Inside a cozy parlor, the two generals shook hands and signed papers of peace.

Grant told Lee's tired soldiers they could go home and keep their horses to help plant their farms.

The country was finally one country again, and the hard work of healing could begin.
